In Pakistan the first known case of heroin use was recorded 1980th In 1981 there were only 25 cases recorded. In 1986 there were half a million cases. Now it is estimated that between 1-1500000 cases in a population of 95 million. The rate of growth of narcotic addiction in Pakistan is higher than in the United States. In addition to heroin addicts, there are about 1 million users of opium and hashish, and 300,000 sedative abusers. The actual number of alcoholics is difficult to determine because they are usually not treated. There are only 26 rehabilitation centers and 10,000 social workers. By comparison, in the U.S. with a population of 220 million, 15 mil lion alcoholics, 2 million heroin addicts, 5.5 million cocaine users, drug users and soothing 6 million 18 million regular use of marijuana.
